Major Stede Bonnet « Thread Started on Oct 21, 2005, 10:09pm »
Known as the "gentleman pirate'', he is considered one of the least successful pirates ever.
He was an educated landowner in Barbados, and owned a successful sugar plantation in Bridgetown. He randomly left and for seemingly no reason at all decided to become a pirate. The "stepford" society of Bridgetown had him poorly prepared to be a pirate. Most pirates had to either steal or capture thier ships. Stede Bonnet on the other hand, bought his legally and hired 70 crewmembers on a salary.
He had some success of the coasts of Carolina and Virginia, but soon encountered Blackbeard. Blackbeard liked Bonnet and invited Bonnet to join him on his ship. Later Blackbeard took over Bonnets ship completely. Bonnet didn't care and was content aboard Blackbeards ship and was said to read books and wonder the decks of the ship.
He was with Blackbeard during the siege of Charelston, SC.
Was captured by accident, and tried and hanged in 1718
